Matching vs. Coordinating

I had a friend tell me last month that she wanted to wear Red with Pink, and she did not want to conform to regular color matching standards. My response, "That's fine! Things just have go, they don't have to match." It then occurred to me that perhaps there are some out there that don't understand the difference between coordinating vs. matching. I am going to break it down into three easy steps: Complementary Colors, Opposites Attract, and finally Neutrals Go with ANYTHING Even Each Other.

First, lets look at a color wheel.

Complementary Colors: Find colors that are in the same family. If you want to wear red and pink that's ok, but make sure they are a complementary red and pink. mixing your warms and cools can often result in a crazy appearance.

Opposites Attract: We know this is true with couples it is also true with colors. Look at that same color wheel and then understand that the opposite side can match. Blue and Orange, Red and Green, Yellow and Purple...the list goes on. Don't be afraid to pair colors and even prints. Feel free to choose a simple understated pattern with a bold pattern. Don't worry they still go.

Neutrals go with EVERYTHING: Its true! Don't be afraid to pair your neutrals up. Where black with brown, the leopard does it and SO CAN YOU! You CAN mix your metallic, they are neutral. there are no rules with neutrals.

Mommy and Me

As a new mommy of one adorable baby girl I find myself wanting to coordinate my baby to my outfit. I realize of course that a baby is not supposed to be an accessories but, honestly? If you had a baby this adorable wouldn't you want to put her on wear her?

However, I feel that we must clarify; it is not ok for grown women to wear rompers or tutu's but you can color coordinate and wear similar accessories.

Accessories! Where should I spend my money??

Accessories are that special detail to an outfit that can set it off perfectly. I have many customers who want to know where to spend their money and what is reasonable. I always start off this conversation explaining that accessories, like all components to your wardrobe, should stand up well to the "cost per wear" analysis. Make sure that you are willing to pay that item its hourly rate...is it worth it? Only you can answer that! What I will tell you is that there are some staples that I think EVERY woman should have in her wardrobe.
#1: Great Day to Day Purse
#2: Pearls

#3: Head Band

#4: 4-5 sets of Earrings

Lets look at some examples!

Day to Day Purse: This purse should be durable and meet all your primary needs. It should be big enough to hold all your needful day to day items. Look for good construction, such as seaming and straps, along with high end materials such as strong canvas or leather.

Another possibility is a designer purse. Dooney and Burke has an AMAZING guarantee on their bags, you can ALWAYS send in your bag for repairs and if they can't repair it they will send you a certificate for 1/2 off a new bag.

Pearl Necklace: Every girl needs a pearl necklace. They are classic, elegant, and they go with everything!

They don't always have to be the standard strand. Look for special details like this strand from Stella & Dot.

Head Bands: Everyone who knows me knows that I own a MILLION head bands! I love them and I am making them #3 on the MUST HAVE accessories! I like to look for local or small designers for head bands.

Earrings: Earrings are a must have for women and I think you need at least 4 pairs of good earrings.

Looking for accessories is fun! Make sure and take time to do a cost per wear analysis and don't be afraid to invest in some lovely items.

Change your shoes, change your life

Shoes glorious shoes!!!! I love shoes, they can make or break an outfit. They are built for beauty, comfort, protection and so on. They are wonderful and yet it is one of the most difficult items of clothing for most. What is so hard about shoes? Well, there is sizing not just on length but also width. Next there is function to consider, comfort and of course style...so much to consider it can really cause some turmoil. Here are some tips:

Sizing: I have found that most of my clients are wearing the wrong size shoe...you may find that odd but it is true. Proper fit on a shoe is CRITICAL, there is much to consider. Deseriee Stimpert wrote a step by step guide to measuring your foot.

Trace your foot.

Mark the outermost points both length and width of your foot.

Measure the length of your foot with a measuring tape rounding to the nearest 16th mark.

Measure the width of the foot

Measure both feet and take the largest of the two.

Function: What do you need the shoes for? Are they work out shoes, work shoes, date shoes, running around shoes....the list goes on. I say people need at least 5 pairs of shoes to meet the following categories: church, work, workout, date, and comfort shoes. I shoes are just that they are SHOES, not sandals, or flip flops they are SHOES. I say this because many people want their comfort shoes to count as flip flops...I am sorry that does not count. Each of your shoes should serve their purpose well. Work shoes, work out shoes, and comfort shoes should all be comfortable and versatile. Also understand that the shoes you are in the most should be reflected in cost. Don't hesitate to spend a little more money on work shoes that you will wear everyday and all day to ensure that they are comfortable and look good. The function of the shoe will determine the style in many ways. If you are a nurse you are not going to choose 4 inch pumps you are going to choose a specialty comfort shoe, and if you are a banker you are not going to choose crocs you are going to choose a pump or dress shoe.

Use these guides when looking for shoes and you will soon find that you will be able to build a functional and comfortable shoe wardrobe.

I know it has been an obscenely long time since I have written! However, that will be changing!!! For those readers who have not seen the blog before let me introduce myself, I am Sarah Hosman, fashion expert. I aim to keep you in style and to help you find yourself in fashion. Great Skin, Hair and Makeup Help to Complete ANY Outfit! Part 1: Hair

No matter what you are wearing, regardless of how much it cost or what it looks like, a fresh face and nice hair REALLY help to make you feel GREAT. How you look on the outside and the image you project to others directly affect the way you feel about your self and the results you get from others.

Lets go ahead and just dispel some myths right now about hair and make up.

Myth 1: You can't a fashionable hair do and make up in less then 1/2 hour. WRONG!!!!

Myth 2: My hair is awful and nobody knows how to cut it. WRONG!!!

Myth 3: Skin care routines are too time consuming and don't really help any way. WRONG!!!

Myth 4: Good skin care costs too much money. WRONG!!!

Myth 5: Wearing a lot of make up just makes people look fake. WRONG!!!

We are going to cover each of these myths and I am going to explain how to make you feel great in just a few minutes. Hair: First and most important is that a good hair dresser is worth their weight in Gold. Not to be critical but Supercuts, Great Clips, these types of chain stores will not provide a quality hair cut as a rule. There is always the exceptions but don't live by the exceptions live by the rules. Look for a salon that has an established clintel and take recommendations from your friends who have good hair cuts.

Here are some other tips for getting a good hair cut.

Your hair dresser should be in the age range of 22-40 so that he or she is up to date on the latest hair trends, styles and techniques.

Look for a hairdresser that has been styling for more then 3 years. This does not include beauty school or assisting time.

Don't switch hairdressers often, let that hair dresser get to know you and your hair. Even if the first cut is not perfect. Give a hairdresser two chances.

Your hairdresser is not a mind reader! Bring LOTS of pictures in of the hair cut you want along with pictures of the color you want. This helps the hair dresser visualize what you are visualizing.

Look for hair styles that fit your lifestyle and personal hair dressing skills.

When looking for a Shampoo remember that not all shampoos are created equal. Expensive salon brand shampoos are more concentrated and have less additives creating softer and shinier hair. I have used Redkin for years and I love it. Bedhead is another good brand. I have found that shampoos like Pantene and Finesse tend to weigh the hair down and build up like soap scum in your hair. My Redkin Shampoo costs $24 for the large bottle and I have to replace it every 9 months, I wash my hair 3 times a week so that shampoo costs me $.22 a wash. 25oz of Pantene usually costs about $8.50, one bottle used to last me 3-4 months which means that it is really the same cost... Always look at COST PER USE not cost.

When you are styling your hair look for details...If you are going to "pony up" with a ponytail then make it a stylish ponytail. If you are going to wear it straight and down why not try an inexpensive head band. I have always found that a 1920's hair style and fashion looks good on me so I take a lot of inspiration from that. I usually wear head bands, barretts and bows that fit that look. You can do the same, look through the decades and look for inspiration from styles of that decade. (Don't pick the 80's though....it was a bad time for hair)

Honor the Occasion and Respect Yourself With Your Attire!

I know that I have blogged about this before but it is a point that is so important! That point is dressing appropriately for the occasion to show honor and respect to those you are with and yourself. I want to set up some important guidelines to follow when dressing for different occasions.

I know many struggle with this and building a wardrobe that will work in your life so please feel free to use me! I am Sarah Hosman, Personal Shopper and Stylist. I would like to make you feel GREAT 100% of the time and help you find a wardrobe that will work for you and your life.

Out to Dinner with Friends: This sort of event does not require a ball gown but it does require some effort. Depending on the restaurant take a few extra minutes to make sure you are wearing a nice top and appropriate Pants or skirt. Unless you are at the Beach it is NEVER appropriate to wear shorts to dinner. Here are some suggestions:

Hot Date with your Man: Ladies don't go frumpy when you are on date with your sweetie, make sure you look sexy for him. This is a good time to show off your figure and your curves. Show a little skin for him! Here are some suggestions:

Church: This where you go to worship your creator and show respect for him...well then, dress nicely! I saw folks leaving from church on Sunday in shorts and tee shirts...UNACCEPTABLE!!! Men should always look to dress business professional and the same is true for women. Here are some suggestions:

Wedding: Depending on the theme usually go with church appropriate is wedding appropriate. If the wedding is on the beach or outside you can dress down but still keep it classy. Here are some suggestions:

Work: Depending on your work place you may be able to dress down or have to dress up either way make sure your hair and makeup are done cute so that you look professional. Remember that anything you would wear to the club should never be worn as work attire. Dress to impress and dress up! It will get you noticed in a positive way and could lead to a promotion. Here are some suggestions for business casual to business professional:

Stylish workout wear

Workout gear is one of those necessary evils in my mind. You can't go to the gym in stilettos and a pencil skirt...you just get strange looks....I know I have tried...But no need to fear I am hear to give a little peak into some stylish and easy work out pieces even on a budget.

Now this blog and personal shopper in no way advocate wearing active wear as day to day wear...NOT OK! Gym cloths are for the gym!

Tops: The most important thing to consider here is if your lovely lady lumps are fit for a built in bra top or if a sports bra and top are the right way to go. I would say that any one below a D cup can wear a bra top and anyone D and above would want to consider a supportive active wear bra and an over shirt.

I would like to take a moment to pay tribute to the worlds GREATEST clothing innovation...the Sun Dress! I am a huge sun dress fan and I wait with bated breath for summers hot months to wear only sun dresses. The great part about a sun dress is that it is 1-2 easy pieces, they are cool, they are inexpensive and you can wear sandals with them, and you always look put together and great in a sun dress. I generally buy 3-5 of them to rotate through out the week.

Summer weather is upon us and we know what means...the dreaded SWIMMING SUIT. Even I dread swimming suit shopping so I have decided to post some tips and trends for swimming suits that will hopefully help you find the Perfect Suit!

As for me this year I will be dawning a bikini for the first time in my life because I think few things are cuter then a pregnant woman in a bikini. I chose this one from Victoria Secret. My husband and I found out we are having a girl! Hurray for baby fashion! Here are a couple of pictures of the little one.

What you should first think of is what is your problem area or areas. Do you want your chest to be perky and appear younger and larger? Do you want your bum to appear smaller? Do want your waist to appear smaller? Do you want to be fully covered or show a little skin? So first evaluate what you want out of a Suit.

Apples: You will usually want to slim the waist and wrangle the girls while showing off your lovely limbs. This suit by Shape FX will help you to feel slimmer because it has a built in control top that will slim you down. The rouching also helps to mask any unsightly love handles.

Pears: You will usually want to slim down the bottom and minimize it. The Swim dress is a GREAT alternative to regular swim suits. Shape FX shows how the cut of this suit will flatter the bottom and enhance the bust.

Many pears boast a fabulous tummy and small waist so this alternative has a vintage feel with a modern twist that will accent the top while still covering the bottom.

Cost-Per-Wear

I felt the need to cover this topic in a little more detail while I was out shopping with some friends this weekend. We went to Nordstroms, Athropologie, and Ann Taylor Loft to name a few and as we each tried on different outfits we all evaluated how we looked and liked the item and of course we evaluated the price tag. The two friends I was with have VERY different approaches to shopping, not that one is better then other but it go me thinking how many of us are like this.

My friend Susan likes nice things! She loves Anthro and Nordstroms and buys almost exclusively from those stores. However, she works from home and has three lovely kids, as such her "work uniform" is pretty casual and needs to be "wash and wear". She tried on SEVERAL adorable jersey tops for me at Anthropologie. Don't get me wrong I love the tee's at Anthro but they are not inexpensive. They range in price from $40-$80, now she could by a similar shirt from Target for $10-$30. One may try to argue that the top from anthro will last longer...it won't the wearing out of fabric has more to do with the number of times you wash it. Ok, so lets look at cost-per-wear. I believe that most items should ultimately cost you pennies in your cost-per-wear. I like to keep my casual close under 10 cents. That means a $10 tee should be worn 100 times. Thats not a small number! So if you choose a tee from Anthro for $48 it would need to last 480 wears! So that top better look AMAZING on you.

My friend Lidia is a wonderful person who really evaluates cost per wear almost to a fault. We found an ADORABLE top on sale at Ann Taylor for $20. It was a fancy jersey shirt. So she needs to wear it 200 times to get a good cost per wear. Lidia analyzed the purchase all the way to car.

Here is the deal ladies there is a formula to follow. Fit First, Cost Second, Need Third. Does it fit and do you feel great in it? Does it fit the budget? (BUILD A BUDGET BEFORE GOING SHOPPING) Do you really need it? Treat your close shopping like grocery shopping. What do you need? and how much can you spend? This is the number one question I will ask a client before we go shopping.

Lets break down the cost per wear to look for in casual shirts, dress shirts, jeans, church/evening out dress, casual dress, slacks and skirts.

Casual Shirts- $0.10

Dress Shirts- $0.20-$0.25

Jeans- $0.20

Nice Dress- $1.00-$5.00

Casual Dress-$0.50-$2.00

Slacks- $0.25-$1.00

Skirts- $0.20-$1.50

You can see the cost per wear helps you to determine how many of each item you need in your wardrobe. If you are a stay at home mommy then you probably only need one pair of slacks, while the professional may only need two pairs of jeans.

Spring Forward in Style

Spring is a fresh start! Your fashion should include a fresh start too! We are going to take a look at some fashion tips and trends to make your spring wardrobe SING.

Lets take a look at great spring attire for Work, Casual, Evening Out/Social Events, and Maternity. We will also look at some inexpensive ways to PUNCH up your current wardrobe for spring. WORK:

Look for trousers and skirts that are in the color pallets of navy, grey, and camel. These colors are softer and match up to pastels and brights better then black. Look for tops that have bright colors and accessorize with florals. (The items shown can be found at Ann Taylor Loft)

Casual:

Look for tops that are light and airy perhaps in the tunic style. Look for straight pants and shorts. Also look to dress up a plain outfit with accessories like a scarf, head band, hat or bag. Be careful when accessorizing not to wear all your accessories at once!

I love SPRING!!! I just do, I am always ready to shed my winter cloths for some awesome Spring Cloths. Top on my priority list of things to buy is EASTER FROCKERY! I don't believe that Easter Dresses are just for little girls they are for girls of any age. I love the idea of having a lovely new spring dress to dawn at Church on Easter Sunday. So lets look at some dress ideas for each of the body types.

First rule of Easter frockery is that the color scheme should fit the occasion, look for pastels, floral colors, whites and creams to celebrate the season.

Pear:

Look for a dress that will complement your petite top half and demphasize your lower half. Looking for V-Necks as they draw attention up to your lovely face.

Apple:

Look for Tunic style dress that will float away from the middle section.

Upper Figure:

Look for a dress that will demphasize the broadness of the shoulders and has many feminine details.

Linear:

Look for famine details and cinching at the waist.

Maternity:

Look for items that will emphasize your cute tummy but won't make you look like a floral nightmare.

Trace Atkins, Queen and Sir Mixalot have made a fortune singing about the Lower Figured Woman. Badonkadonk, Apple Bottom, Pear, Junk in the Trunk...these names all honor one fabulous body part! The BUM!!! Ladies your lower figure is lovely because a rounder posterior implies fertility, the term birthing hips hold true. It is often easy for the lower figure to find well fitting tops for their delicate top half, but finding a pair of pants that fits the hips while actually clasping the waist is difficult. First rule to dressing all Body Types is to never accessorize and embellish the fullest part of your body. For the lower figure that means choosing pants and skirts that will de-emphasize your fullest "asset". Look for pants that are flat-front and have a straight leg. Avoid high waisted trousers that sit above the navel and lower rise trousers that don't reach your tiny waist. I know it is hard but TRY EVERY PAIR OF PANTS ON!

Rule two, look for skirts that fit the hips then continue straight down. Bias-cut, A-line,wrap, fit-and-flare, and straight styles are all“go’s”. Pencil shapes or full pleats are “no’s” as they highlight imbalance.Rule three is to look for balance between your top and bottom the best way to do that is to choose tops that have bold colors, big patterns, and special details. Look to build up your petite top to help balance your Ample Bottom.

Rule four, dresses are great! Look for dresses that have an A-Line skirt as they will balance and create the illusion of an hour glass figure. Look for Dresses with embellishment and detail towards the top but not the bottom.

Hello folks I wanted to spend some time discussing the different body types more in depth to help you "figure" out your FIGURE... The first group we are going to look at is one of the most common figures: Middle Figured/Apples, these gals are our Renaissance Women. Renaissance art portrayed women with a delicious creamy center to show their femininity, health and approachability. Middle Figure simply means your fullest part is around your navel. Despite the signs of health and approachability Middle Figures can often suffer from a lack of confidence and frustration with shopping. Middle Figures need to remember that in spite of their warm center they have amazing limbs that can help give them a more slender look.

Rule two is to look for tops with structure that float away from the tummy. Middle Figured Women can look for larger prints, but use with caution. Look for jackets that have great seaming and fit the broadest part of you.

Rule three is to direct attention up to your face you can often do that with a fancy neckline that is rounded or V-neck and exposes a bit of skin. This item came from Anthropologie

Pants! Look for pants that have structured supportive waist band and are mid rise. You want to avoid pants that give you "grandma pants" (this means your pant waist band hits under your bust line) or give you the muffin top (pants sitting too low that cause the tummy to expand out the top) Many apples complain of a flatter tushy so look for pants that have buttons on the back pockets and sit higher on the bottom. Underpinnings! If you still feel uncomfortable with your tummy then look for underpinnings that give you a cleaner line over your tummy. This item came from Spanx

Figures of First Lady's

Ever since Jackie Kennedy wore this stunning Oleg Cassini gown at her husbands inauguration, the country has watched the fashion of the First Lady. Jackie always chose classic lines and cuts that flattered her Linear figure well. There is a tremendous responsibility to be both elegant and classy while not looking matronly and boring. We have had many First Lady's work hard at creating an appropriate image to flatter their different body types. I want to take a breif look at First Lady Fashion through the decades.

Our darling Laura Bush is an Upper Figured woman (larger proportionally on top then below) Many of her formal gowns have feminine details and often use a V-neck line which works well to minimize a broader chest.

Power house Hillary Clinton is a Lower Figured woman, as is Michelle Obama. I want it to be noted though how Michelle is dressing her figure more flattering then Hillary. Hillary trys to hide her ample rear end while Michelle lets her "solo" act stand on its own. When lower figured women use long jackets and tops to cover their bottoms they end up calling more attention to them. You are putting a big tent over your bottom. Michelle's jackets are shorter and break at the hip. They draw attention to her waist. While the skirts and pants she chooses are often in a neutral color and have little details so as to not draw more attention.

Barbara Bush, Americas Grandma, is a classic Middle Figured woman, this means she has softer center of the body. Middle figured women should look for tops that either "lock and load" the middle using seaming and darts that will give the appearance of a smaller waist line. They can also look for items that float away from the middle. Barbara did not no do this perfectly but she tried. However, lets look more at the fashion from the current inauguration. I must at this time give props to Michelle for her STUNNING outfits for the Inauguration and Ball. She wore an elegant Isabel Toledo gold dress with matching over coat. This was a Jackie moment! I only wish she had a hat to match her shoes and gloves....I am obsessed with hats... Jason Wu designed this elegant and classy ball gown worn by Michelle later that night at the Inaugural Ball.

Is She the First Lady of Fashion?

I am not sure if anyone out there knows our soon to be First Lady, Michelle Obama, but if you do please direct her to my blog! First, it would be fun if she actually stopped by. Second, I want us to evaluate the things she is doing well in dress and style, as well as how it can improved. President Elect Obama ran on the slogan of "YES WE CAN!" and the tag line of Change. So, I am calling for some "Change" in not only Michelle Obamas dress but also our own.

The first thing is to realize Michelle is being professionally dressed to fit a "look", each of us has our own look and and signature style. I would classify Michelle Obamas signature style as a mixture of masculine/feminine with some "classic" touches in her exsessories. She wears basic colors, usually solids with classic simple shapes. I have heard it said on several occasions that she is the First Lady of Fashion. However, I don't think she is quite a Jackie yet. This may sound harsh but I thought she wearing a maternity dress at her husbands acceptance speech. The issue with the dress was the red. If it had been red all over with the black banding at the waist it would have been fine. However, the red on her stomach and hips drew attention to make them appear large.

Michelle Obama is a classic pear shape. This means that perportionally she is wider around her hips and bum then she is around her bust. This shape is beautiful and great but it has rules. Michelle Obama chooses to often pick a pencil skirt shape for dresses and skirts. The difficulty with pencil skirts is that they can often look boxy. This has happened to Michelle on a few occasions.

Pears look for tops that will help add volume to help balance the body to look more "hour glass" Look for skirts that have an A-Line shape like the one below.

Pears also look for necklines and details that draw the eye up to your face and away from you rear.

Fashion Resolutions

We are not quite 10 days into the New Year and I just wanna know how many of us have already broken our New Years Resolutions? This year I opted out of resolving to do anything except being absolutely fabulous all the time. That's right! I resolved to put me on the priority list and make sure that I took time each morning to make sure I am a perfect 10. But what I want everyone to know is that perfect 10 does not need to take hours but rather it can take under thirty minutes. I want to give everyone a few products and tips to help you look and feel like a 10. these tips are for all ages and budgets!

Hair: You wear your hair everyday and because of that it is extremely important to get a good hair cut. A good hair cut is worth paying some extra money on because of the "cost per wear". If you spend $45 to get your hair cut and you wear it 24/7 for 6-8 weeks then it is less then $1 per day. But most of the time you can get a good hair cut for $20-$35.

Next is your Shampoo and Conditioner...you will find many opinions on this, I personally use Redkin, the Smooth Down formula. Regardless of what brand you choose stick with the same brand for Shampoo and Conditioner. For fine hair check out LUSH's Big Shampoo, it has sea salts that you rub into the scalp it really ads body and volume. They are chemically formulated to work together. However, styling products you can mix and match. I personally use Big Sexy Hair Spray for styling. Choose a hair style that works with your natural hair and can be done by you in 15 minutes or less. A pony tail is not a style! Your stylist should be able to teach you how to style the hair cut that they have given to you and you should be able to do it quickly. You can spend more time on your hair for a special occasion but everyday it needs be done and ready to go in 15 minutes.

Face: This is your beauty routine! It needs to start with a clean and fresh face. A wonderful beauty routine can make you feel expensive and pampered but, it does not need to take a long time and it does not have to be expensive. Again, I am going to go back to cost per wear. Something may cost a bit more upfront but if it lasts longer and works better then its cost per wear is better then something that is cheaper.

I have been a Mary Kay Beauty Consultant for 7 years and I have used the product for over 10 years and it is the ONLY product I personally recommend. I have taught women for years that a beauty routine from face wash to makeup in 7 minutes. Start with a cleanser, move to a moisturizer and age fighting serum, eye creams, foundation, and finish with the rest of your make up. I can teach you how to do this in less then 10 minutes from start to finish.

Gift Returns

I hope that everyone had safe and Happy Holidays! It was a lovely time for me but myself like many of you most likely received a gift that was...not what you expected. This occurs quite often around the Holidays; perhaps your mother thinks you are perpetually 5 years old, or a great aunt has it in her head that you need a cake platter every year, or perhaps your husband thinks that you are 2 sizes smaller then you actually are. Regardless of the reason or the gift somethings needs to be returned. I want to give you some time saving tips to make those Holiday Returns a little easier.

Tip #1: Make a detailed list of everything that needs to be returned and what store it is from. Some things are not going to be returnable but that's OK, they can be white elephant gifts for next year.

Tip #2: Find as many gift receipts as you can. If you are embarrassed you can always tell the gift giver that "its the wrong size" and explain that you are simply going to exchange it. (Yes, it is a little white lie, but it is worth getting rid of the "hoodie vest" you got.)

Tip #3: Don't just settle on the first thing that is "OK" in the store. Wait if you need to and get a gift card. After Christmas the stores are all cleared out of things and if you can't find something you love wait a week or two for the store to restock.

Tip #4: Find the return lines right a way. Most major retailers expect returns and have a special line just for returns. Find the line and be patient with the associates. Returns can be tricky for some retailers so be patient.

Tip #5: Be considerate when giving gifts yourself, always give the receiver a gift receipt to make their life easy and don't be offended if it is not their "cup of tea".

Offical Shopping Season is Upon Us!

Amide all the economic turmoil around us I have a feeling that for many of us it will be business as usual when it comes to shopping for Christmas gifts. Men I know you will have no clue what to get the ladies in your life. And Ladies I know there is always some one on your list that you have no idea what to get them. So I am going to provide a list of economically friendly ideas for the women in our lives.

Apron with Recipe cards: This is a perfect idea for those enjoy cooking or who have only been married a couple of years. (This apron shown also has matching pot holders and towels) Aprons at Anthrpologie are under $40. Blissful Living Studio has a class to make cute aprons as well. Sleepy Time: Cute pajamas are always fun to get at Christmas time. Ann Taylor Loft has several cute pajamas under $40. Another idea is to wrap up a premium lotion with the pajamas.

Monogram related products have made a come back. Combining some cute monogram items from Anthropologie is another great idea. If you are crafty you can embroider monogram handkerchiefs. Michael's also sells large wooden letters that you can decorate and paint to fit that persons personality.

Clean Out that Closet

Closets are often where people hide things: skeletons, forbidden loves, terrible birthday gifts we can't return. You name it, its in your closet...I want to tackle the issue of cleaning out your closet. As I enter a clients closet I often find some common issues that are holding a wardrobe back.

To begin the cleansing process I suggest taking one of your days off and pulling EVERYTHING you own out for a fashion show. This fashion show is going to help you determine a number of things.

Before you do this though we must get serious about a few things: First, your cloths do not define you! I know most of you are thinking this is an odd thing for a personal shopper to say but I am telling you the truth! You make you! It is your radiant personality that people love and I can help you express that through the medium of clothing but it is not who you are. Second, cloths work for you and not the other way around. If something does not fit or work for your body it is not because there is something wrong with you but rather the cloths. You are perfect just the way you are. Third, be honest with yourself, not everything in your closet is good quality, if its not working its time to give it up. I need you to remember these rules as you conduct your fashion show with yourself.

Piles: Give Away, Menders, Seasonal, Garden/Cleaning Cloths, and Toss/Burn

Give Away: These are items that just don't fit you anymore but are still in decent condition. During your fashion show if cloths are tugging and pulling or you can't get them on it is time for them to go. I don't care if you used to be a size 4, if you are not a size 4 now it has to go! Dress the size you are not the size you want to become.

Menders: These are items that are missing a button or the hem has fallen out. they are not bad they just need some TLC. The only thing with the menders pile is that you need to promise it will be mended in the next week. If it not going to get mended then it needs to go in the give away pile. Also don't forget about your shoes, they can be mended if a heal is worn down or the sole is wearing. they can be mended.

Seasonal: We all have seasonal cloths and certain things will get put away until next season. The thing with seasonal items we can sometimes get sick of them or worn out if that is the case then please put them in the give away pile as well.

Garden/Cleaning Cloths: these are cloths that you have spilt bleach on or worn a small hole in but they are suitable for wearing around the house for chores. But be warned that you are only allowed 2 cleaning outfits and maybe 1 Camping outfit. Unless you go camping a great deal you need not keep these items around.

Toss/Burn: We all have items that are not suitable for any human to wear. Pit stains in white blouses, warn out crotches in pants, frayed ends of jeans, faded items and so on. These items need to be tossed and burned. They are not appropriate any longer for human viewing. You are better then worn out items.

This one goes out to all my voluptuous ladies out there! I know the struggles that many of you face because they are similar to all women's if it just finding and dressing your body correctly and finding the best stores for you. First, let me refer all readers back to the basic body types. All body types hold true regardless of size so it is important to remember that because you need to first address your problem areas so make sure you know your body type.

Back to the topic at hand. I am not going to classify anyone as a "plus size" but rather simply give you some suggestions and tips on great stores that I have found for a full figured woman.

Rule #1: Keep proportion in mind make sure you are keeping your accessories and prints in proportion with your height and size. Petite women should avoid a large hand back as it will dwarf them in size and make them appear larger. Those with greater stature and presence should avoid small dainty brackets and belts as they will look proportionally smaller.

Rule #2: Buy cloths that have shape to them and accentuate your positive attributes. No Moomoo's or shapeless tees!

Rule #3: Don't close out any clothing type even if it is difficult. Don't count out pants, skirts or dresses just because they are difficult to fit. Look for pants, skirts and dresses that are figure flattering and don't cover your whole body to make you look like a big pillar with no curves.

Maternity fashion is a huge concern. I know many of you out there are mommy’s and even expecting so I wanted to help you find the best fashions possible! Mothers need to be aware of the amazing resources available to them. First here are some fashion do’s and don’ts :

Do:

Choose clothing that you can mix and match so you don’t get tired of wearing the same thing.

Plan on buying cloths for the different stages of pregnancy. You will find that you change shape and size and you will gain more weight.

Buy a great looking pair of low-heeled, fashionable shoes in a neutral tone. Your center of gravity shifts during pregnancy, so you want to be safe and comfortable while looking your best.
Splurge on one or two key party outfits. This is your chance to treat yourself to something special that fits your own personality, taste, and style.

Find supportive and comfortable underpinnings. Make sure you are also fitted for a new bra and nursing bra.

Don’t:

Don't always buy according to size. Focus on fit. There are many variables, ranging from designers’ cuts to how women carry, that will determine what works best for you. The only way to know is to try on a variety of items.
Don't buy plus sizes if you’re not. These clothes are cut larger all over. Fitted maternity clothes, like a little black dress, can make you look more sophisticated, attractive, and sexy.
Don't wear your husband’s clothes all the time. He may look sexy in them, but you may not get the same results.
Don't wear bold patterns and colors if you are heavyset or long tops if you are petite. They are not as flattering as other choices.
Don't try to squeeze into your clothes for too long; they just make you look heavier and uncomfortable.
Don't hide your belly; pregnancy is a time to celebrate your growing abdomen and to show off your new figure.

Mimi Maternity has a wonderful line of “Secret Fit Belly” skirts, pants and shorts that hug the belly during all stages of pregnancy and even after, the band is a light breathable fabric that does not give the tell tale sights of maternity pants. These pants are a GREAT investment in any maternity wardrobe.

Are you projecting the real you???

Epictetus said, "Know, first, who you are; and then adorn yourself accordingly." Today's world is filled with mixed messages about who we are and should be as women. I think sometimes that we forget what an incredible creation master piece the woman is. I am of Christan Faith and as such believe that woman was the culmination of Gods work and once completed He said that the work was done. Ladies regardless of faith or back ground there is no denying the miracle that is woman, with her tenderness to nurture and care while being strong and thoughtful the curves of her body and the sweetness with in her eyes, she is a master piece. I say this because as I stated before we are constantly bombarded with mixed messages as to whom and what we should look like. Let us start at the beginning, Know Who You Are! How you choose to adorn yourself is direct reflection of your inner most thoughts and feelings of yourself. Now I am not meaning to take you on an existential journey into yourself and world in which you live but rather diagnose what our fashion says about us.

"But its comfortable." If I had a dollar for every time I have heard this phrase. I am a big believer that comfort is KING. Comfort does not equal sloppy. Unkempt ways such as wrinkles, stains, holes, smelly shoes, unkempt hair, no make up and worse of all sweats outside of the gym are all signs that we have given up. Neatness in our dress and appearance, whether and expensive lavish wardrobe or a modest humble wardrobe, conveys a feeling of sobriety and control in ones life. Sloppiness in dress and appears convey a feeling of inner chaos and turmoil. Know who you are!

"If I get rid of this I will not be me!" I usually hear this one as I am recommending that women shed the skin of their former selves to become the butterfly of tomorrow. Ladies, a piece of clothing my have been your signature piece in high school but that is not who you are today. In high school you knew nothing about life and love but, now you have experiences and wisdom that define you as supremely more interesting. Explore that lovely lady and dress her accordingly! the other word of wisdom is to be age appropriate in your dress and trends. When a we dress out of our age bracket we are saying that we are uncomfortable embrasing and accepting the age and experieance we have. I have seen this delema go both ways. Remember it is ok to look your age and still be Perfectly Beautiful.

Costume Trap! Ladies you may be a "wacky and wild woman" but if your cloths constantly look that way you may be victim of looking like a costume. Costume wardrobe says that you are trying to hide from who you really are. It can also convey a lack of sincerity or honesty because you are hiding behind your "costume". Are you wearing your cloths or are your cloths wearing you?

Examining "who you are" is not meant to morph you into anything you are not but rather an opportunity for you to consider who you are and who you want to project to the world.

Looking for a signatures style is so important and like Edith said what is wrong with looking like you? Important Sarah rule #1 is YOU ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE, IF CLOTHS DON'T LOOK GOOD THEN THEY HAVE THE PROBLEM NOT YOU. Romantic: This look is extremely inspired by romantic literate and period films. It includes lace and ruffles in all their glory. Favorite Store might be Anthropolgie

Sexy Sirens: These lovely ladies are all about the seduction of a single look. Plunging necklines and low back dresses. Favorite Store might be Bebe

Masculine/Feminine: These ladies are not drawn to an overly done up look. They are all about function and streamline. Favorite Stores might be Banana Republic

Rocker: This girl is wild and full of life. She is not afraid to try an alternative look and trend. This is a trendy look and needs be age appropriate. Favorite stores might include pieces from many stores or might enjoy designers like Jeffrey Sebelia winner of Project Runway Season 3.

Risk Takers: These Ladies like to choose one or two trendy items that make them feel unique and special. A large hat, an elaborate scarf, signature jewelry, and wild shoes. Sex and city was the playground for the risk taker. Sarah Jessica Parker was a fashionista risk taker. Favorite stores might include the Bitten line by Sarah Jessica Parker.

The Under Arsenal

I feel the need to tackle the issue of the under arsenal. Many women are unhappy with the appearance of their body. I watched a reality TV show called "The Swan". The premise of the show is women getting extreme plastic surgery in an effort to radically change their "ugly duckling" looks. I hate this concept. It confirms to women that there is something wrong with them. I watched the whole show and in the end they did nothing that I could not do with appropriate underpinnings and new hair and make up. Ladies you are beautiful!!! I don't care who you are. Cloths work for you and not the other way around. If you are considering radical surgery to fix you call me first! I am Sarah Hosman, Personal Shopper and Stylist, I promise I can radically change your perception of who you are and how you look, and you won't have to mortgage your house to do it. I have also been a makeup artist working with Mary Kay Cosmetics for 10 years. Let me now tackle the main point of this blog UNDER WEAR!!!

This seems like common sense, but many a stylish woman have missed the mark because of poor foundation garments. While the thong is an excellent concept for the bedroom and VPL (Visible Pantie Line) we can all agree that it does leave the wearer a bit exposed. The key to undergarment world can be summed up in one word: NUDE. You want it to look like you are wearing nothing at all and have a seamless streamline look. Look for fabrics that are nude in color also this will only enhance the nude appearance.

Bras: First get a GOOD bra fitting. You can contact me or go to Nordstroms for an appropriate bra fitting. This is the first an most essential part. 70% of women wear an ill fitting brassiere. Select a bra with under wiring, smooth fabric and sits low on the back. Your lift should come from a supportive back not your straps. Look for a thicker cup to avoid a "turkeys done look". My personal favorite bra is Le Mystere.

Panties: Avoid creating a lumpy roll around your midsection with a pantie waistband that is too tight. Instead opt for knickers that rise to where there is less flesh to contort. There are panties to create a more shapely bum and others to reduce the size of an already shapely tushie. if you are looking for a tummy tuck then try panties and "girdle" you in(the waist band on these will rise just under the bra strap). Spanx is a well known girdle site that is quite comfortable though not the only option. For full body shapers buy them in separates for ease in the restroom...

Slip: A simple slip can help you avoid a host of fashion embarrassments like sunlit transparency and static stick up.

Fall Must Have's and Trends

As we happily approach the cooler weather and fantastic fall festival of color we are reminded of all the renewals of Fall. It was the time to go back to school and ringing in of the holiday season. Fall has traditionally had colors and styles associated with it and I want to show you how to put a new spin on the classics. Lets examine some trends and how to do them right. Here are the Fall MUST HAVES of the season.

#1--Over sized Cardigan: Ladies this is one that needs to be done just right and for you shorter gals like myself you need to be careful about fit not make yourself appear shorter. You can find the style above by clicking HERE.

#2--Pencil Skirt: Pencil Skirts are the essence of Sexy and Sassy. Check out this Adorable style at Anthropolie. I have a close relationship with a Personal Shopper at Anthropolgie and we can help you style a unique and sophisticated look for every season.

#3--The Masculine Trouser: This is not wearing your hubbies jeans this is finding a trouser with a sharp look. It is important to pair opposites like a masculine bottom with a feminine top.

#4--Tuxedo Ruffle: Ladies this is a hot look! Look for large over sized ruffles but Apples beware of too much that could create more volume that is unflattering. Check out this Fabulous coat at Anthropologie.

Discovering Your Body Type

As a personal shopper one of the chief complaints I hear is "I'm too fat", coupled with "nothing ever fits me". LADIES! This is simply not true. You are perfect the way you are and it is appropriate to dress your current body nicely so that you will have a positive outlook on you. Most people are surprised to find out that fit is the most easily resolved of the fashion foibles. I think that we can all agree that pants should not hand down at the ankles or jacket arms hang down past our palms...Yet I see FIT problems all day long and it is destroying your self image ladies. May I so aptly propose that we all get to know and love our body type.
Let me introduce you to the four body types:

Pears: Ladies you have "pa-dunk-a-dunk" You need to work what you got! Love your tush and curves not everyone gets those.

Pears: Look for straight leg pants , A-Line skirts and avoid anything tapered

Ruler: You are straight and thin. These are model bodies!

Rulers: Look for items to emphasis and define the waist to give a curvier look.

Hour Glass: This is the look that we all strive for. Marilyn Monroe was a perfect hour glass and it is a give. You are a "brick house".
Hour Glass: Look for items that emphasis your small waist and work with your curves.

Apples: You need to "shake what your mama gave ya!" You have larger arms, shoulders and chests plus you have GREAT legs.

Apples: Look for wrap tops to de-emphasize the chest and show off those great legs! (but not with Shorty Shorts)
